KARACHI: Teachers guild at Karachi University slammed the notice issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan asking the university administration to assign teachers election duties as required on the polling day.

A meeting was held on the campus in which the teachers termed the notice issued by the election commission as “harassment of female colleagues”.

“Prof Jamil Kazmi, the Kuts president, told the session that KU teachers haven’t performed any election duty over the past 25 years. And, it’s not just KU teachers who get exemption from election duty, teachers at many other universities in the province, for instance, Sindh University, Mehran University, Karachi Medical and Dental College, Institute of Business Administration, and Dow University of Health Sciences, also get exemption,” says a press release.

“The same practice prevails at some universities located in other parts of the country, including Punjab University and Peshawar University”

It also states that the university had already provided 1,635 (non-teaching) staff members to the election commission. “Teachers can’t perform election duties because they are busy preparing university exams, checking papers and conducting research.”

Teachers, however, decided to postpone their protest on assurances given by the university administration over their concerns but said they would not succumb to any force.
