Prosecution head resigns from Musharraf’s treason case

TOP NEWS

ISLAMABAD: Prosecution head Mohammad Akram Sheikh tendered his resignation in the treason case against Ex president and chief of army staff (COAS) General (r) Pervez Musharraf.

Resignation letter copy addressed to Yousaf Naseem Khokhar, Secretary Interior is also sent to the president, prime minister’s secretary, secretary to the law and justice division and registrars of the Supreme Court and Special Court.

Akram Sheikh stated, “The newly-elected government may choose to continue with the prosecution of the case and appoint a counsel of its own liking.”

He has explained his inability to proceed with this case since there is change in the government at the Centre.

Previously, the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) government had allotted Sheikh as the prosecutor in the high treason case in November 2013 against Musharraf.

It is not confirmed whether the PTI government-in-waiting will follow the treason case or they will appoint Akram Sheikh once again as the prosecutor.

There is a slight chance that Sheikh might not accept this appointment under PTI government since he is observed close to PML-N.

Previously, in November 2007, the PTI chief had assured to commence proceedings against Musharraf over his unconstitutional acts, but PTI remained silent in this regard.

Also, most of Musharraf’s close aides have also joined PTI. Furthermore, a main member of Musharraf’s party, Dr Amjad took down his nomination papers in favor of Imran Khan in NA-53.

Recently, the apex court call upon Musharraf, who has been staying in Dubai since 2016, but he never showed up regardless of different guarantees provided by the apex court.

According to schedule, the Lahore High Court’s (LHC) Chief Justice Yawar Ali, is planning to visit Islamabad for three days from July 31 and August 2. His visit is mainly to hear the high treason case on August 1.
