Lawyers’ protest turns violent in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: The lawyers protest outside the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan turned violent as police lodged a baton charge and fired shells of tear gas on Tuesday, ARY News reports.

Lawyers from five divisions of Punjab had gathered at Shahrah-e-Dastoor earlier and launched protesting for the formation of bench in their Local High Courts respectively.

The situation intensified when the protestors tried to enter the SC building. Police tried to stop the protestors which started a clash between the officials and the lawyers. Police launched a baton charge and fire tear gas shells to prevent the lawyers from entering the building.

Many protestors were injured during the clashes against the security officials. SC building was also damaged during the scuffle.

Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has announced a countrywide strike against the police torture on Wednesday (tomorrow). All the lawyers will boycott the court proceeding across the country.
