A K-Electric statement said that a 220 KV main transmission line tripped at 9 PM on Tuesday, which caused the tripping of the Units of Bin Qasim Power Plant.

The cascading effect of the tripping of the transmission line plunged the city into darkness.

The power utility earlier claimed that the restoration work would take a couple of hours but later in another statement it said the outage prolonged due to National Grid tripping adding that the teams were working to ‘normalise the situation’.

The fault in the main transmission line triggered a domino effect as power supply to several cities of Sindh and Balochistan disrupted.

According to earlier reports, the breakdown occurred due to a technical fault in transmission line resulting in outage in several areas of the city.

Sources told that 34/62 grid stations and 700/1340 feeders of K-Electric across Karachi tripped due to the fault.

Currently, the K-Electric is being supplied electricity by Wapda and Hubco.

The areas affected from massive outage included Defense, Clifton, Lala Zar Colony, Airport, Alfalah Society, Malir, Gulshan Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Saddar, Lines Area, Lyari, Kharadar, Garden and several others.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the K-Electric Usama Qureshy has said the breakdown occurred due to a fault at Bin Qasim Power Plant, which tripped two power production units.

He added that teams are working to restore power to the city.

Qureshy however said there was no blackout across city as it was only half affected.

On the other hand, operations at the Jinnah International Airport, Karachi have been badly affected due to the breakdown, with computers shut down and the delivery of goods halted.
