The Sharjah Federal Court of Appeal has sentenced an Arab man with a fine of Dh5,000 along deportation for insulting his wife on WhatsApp, Arab media reported on Friday.

Counsel Eman bin Sabt said the Court of Misdemeanours sentenced the husband in absentia for the insulting words he sent to his wife through WhatsApp after the couple had a fight in their house. When the husband left the house, he continued insulting his wife by sending her scornful words on the social media app.

The counsel said the ruling of the court was not accepted by the Public Prosecution, who appealed the ruling and demanded that the husband be deported from the country in accordance with the law.

According to Khaleej Times, Ms bin Sabt said that the court issued a ruling to add deportation to the initial verdict of financial fine, noting that the couple are in their fifties, and have older children, one of their daughters is married.

The legal advisor urged couples not to exchange insults through social media, which is subject to penalties including fines and deportations. This negatively affects the social stability of families as well as the future of their children, she added.

She advised the married people to try to solve marital problems at home without approaching courts as argument between couples is a natural phenomena.
