Model courts settle 756 murder, 1,110 narcotics cases: 20-day report

ISLAMABAD: The model courts, set up country-wide to ensure speedy trials of cases, disposed of 756 murder cases and 1,110 narcotics cases across the country in 20 days, ARY News reported.

A 20-day performance report of 116 model courts of Pakistan has been issued on Monday.

The report said statements of total 7,256 witnesses had been recorded.

It said 55 accused had been sentenced to death, while 170 were given life sentences.

Other 420 culprits have been given 1,384 years, four months and 11 days imprisonment, the report said.

While, rest of the culprits have been fined more than Rs76.901 million, it said.

“The model courts have settled 709 cases from 1985 till 2015 as their priorities include announcing verdict of old cases as well,” the report added.

On April 15, the model courts had settled 36 cases across the country.

The 36 decisions were given by 116 model courts in different cities of the country.

According to director general model courts, the courts had announced decisions in 13 murder and 23 drug offences. The statements of 164 witnesses were also recorded during different hearings.

A convict was also given a death sentence, while four were handed life imprisonment.
