MUZAFFARGARH: A woman belonging to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) defeated her son, contesting independently, in an unusual electoral battle in Muzaffargarh’s PP-272 on Sunday’s by-elections.

Syed Haroon Ahmed Sultan was contesting as an independent candidate against his mother Zehra Batool, who was given the ticket by the PTI.

According to unofficial results from all 134 polling stations in the constituency, Ms Batool received 27,752 votes, while her son bagged 18,853 votes.

The seat was vacated by Syed Basit Sultan Bukhari, who also won as an independent candidate from NA-185 and opted for the National Assembly seat, joining the PTI.

Later, the PTI asked the winning candidate to nominate party candidate for the PP-272 by-poll and he requested his mother Syeda Zehra Abdullah Bukhari, wife of former MPA Syed Abdullah Shah Bukhari, to contest from the constituency her first election.

Interestingly, Zehra’s son Sultan previously ran for the July 25 general elections as an opponent against his brother and sister-in-law.

A total of five contestants were running from PP-272, none of whom belong to the PML-N, hence making for a close competition between the mother and the son.

PROVINCIAL ASSEMBLY RESULTS

During the July 25 general elections, Makhdoom zada Syed Basit Ahmad Sultan had won securing 23649 votes. He was contesting independently. Muhammad Zia Ullah Khan of the PTI secured second position with 18,197 votes.
