Muslim woman in London assaulted for wearing headscarf

“They pulled my headscarf off and started punching and kicking me,” the woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Evening Standard newspaper. “One was dragging my head down while the others were hitting me. They were being so racist and using derogatory terms.”

The British Muslim woman was walking towards a private Islamic primary school in south London, to collect her two children. As she neared the school, a number of women approached her and started hurling abuses at her. The women asked if she felt hot, before proceeding to rip her headscarf off and punching, kicking her. The severe beating caused clumps of her hair to fall off and it only stopped when another parent came to her rescue.

The two women arrested for the assault are aged 18 and 35. They have been released from the police station and ordered to present themselves at a later date. However, a Metropolitan Spokesperson stated that they took crime against any offender seriously.

“We take any offense seriously. We have made two arrests in connection with our ongoing investigation.”

A total of 47,000 hate crimes have been recorded in England during the past 3 years. The majority of the victims of these attacks have been Muslims. Dr. Shuja Shafi, secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, stated that much needed to be done in order to curb such hate crimes against Muslims.

“With racist bullying in schools attributed to Islamophobia on the rise according to ChildLine, job discrimination against Muslims commonplace and regular attacks against Muslims … there is a serious concern that needs to be both acknowledged and tackled,” Shafi said.

Also, it is being alleged that when police officers turned up at the incident, they made fun of the Hijab-clad woman who was attacked.
