The NAB has stated that Sharmila Farooqui along with her father Usman Farooqui and mother Anisa Farooqui are barred from holding any official government post for 21 years.

The entire family of Farooqui was tried under two different cases of corruption and embezzlement. In 2001, there were sentenced to being barred from any public office for at least 21 years under plea bargaining arrangements with the NAB. Both cases relate to illegal assets and massive corruption in the Steel Mills. As a result, they cannot hold any public office till 2022.

The letter states that Farooqui should be immediately dismissed from all public positions as her appointment is against the decision of the NAB. It said that this is gross violation and is tantamount to contempt of its decision.

Sharmila Farooqui has held several positions since the last six years including advisor and Special Assistant to the Sindh Chief Minister, and member of the provincial assembly.
