Nawaz Sharif decries 'double standards of justice' ahead of return to Paksitan

LONDON: Former prime minister Mian Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said that he demands respect for vote and no obstacle can stop him from achieving this goal let alone jail time, ARY News reported.

Addressing the Pakistani community in the British capital, Nawaz Sharif maintained that dictators and corrupt leaders are not being punished but people’s representatives are being named and shamed by the court.

He claimed that the accountability court which awarded him and his daughter jail time “absolved” them of the charge of “corrupt practices” and found no dishonesty in conduct.

“I remained premier but what about her (Maryam Nawaz), she never held a public office,” asked Nawaz about his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

An accountability court on July 6, handed Nawaz Sharif 10 years as jail time for owning assets beyond income and 1 year for not cooperating with NAB in the Avenfield properties corruption reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

His daughter Maryam Nawaz was given 7 years for abetment, and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar was given 1 year for non-cooperation with the anti-graft authority.

Captain (retd) Safdar was arrested on Sunday, July 8 while Maryam Nawaz and Nawaz Sharif are due to return on July 13, Friday.
