Nine-year-old boy invents 'word counting' pen

NEW DELHI: A nine-year-old boy has invented a ‘counting pen’, that informs the writer of the word count while writing.

The prototype of the pen, invented by Muzaffar Ahmad Khan, was displayed at the Festival of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The event was organized by NIF at the Indian Prime Minister’s House in New Delhi.

Explaining what he has innovated, Muzaffar said;

Its a pen with casing attached to its rear. Once someone starts writing,it shows word count that will be displayed on small LCD monitor attached to it or can also be displayed on one’s mobile phone through a message: Muzaffar Ahmad Khan, who invented counting pen #JammuAndKashmir pic.twitter.com/lumBUycWiy

Studying in Class-III at his village government school in Tulail in Gurez tehsil of occupied-Kashmir, Muzaffar said that the idea of counting pen stuck his mind when he got minimum marks in an exam.

“In my last exam, I got minimum marks as I wrote fewer words. It made me restless and from that very time, I started thinking of inventing something which can save my time and finally ‘counting pen’ struck my mind,” he said.

After working on the idea for some time, Muzaffar somehow was put in touch with National Innovation Foundation, an autonomous body under the Indian Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi, where he was helped to develop his idea into the pen.

The pen is believed to help students during their exams when they have to maintain word count of their essays and long-form questions.Muzaffar says the counting pen will be available in the market in May as NIF has already decided to make it commercially available.
