Not my job to finish a game, says Fakhar Zaman

TOP NEWS

DUBAI: Rising Pakistan’s limited overs sensation Fakhar Zaman who is representing Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season three, surprised everyone by saying that he is not responsible to finish the game as he is an opener and can only set a platform for the coming batsmen.

When asked how important it is learn to finish the game, Zaman said: “I tried to stay at the wicket but the opener’s job is to give a good start to the team. I am a top order batsman and I don’t see myself in the role of a match finisher.”

Zaman knocked 30-ball 49 with four sixes but fell at the crucial moment with just 48 needed off 30 balls in his team’s chase of 180-run target. Multan Sultans then bounced back by taking seven wickets for just four runs to pull off a stunning 43-run victory.

Zaman and Umar Akmal accelerated the innings for Lahore in middle overs for Lahore with a 65-run partnership for third wicket but they both fell to injudicious shots, leaving a big question mark over Pakistan’s young players’ ability to finish a game.

On the other hand he agreed that Pakistani youngsters should learn how to finish the game.

“It is must for a player to finish the match. You can become a great player if you learn that. All great players are known for their ability to finish the match. I did try but couldn’t do it,” said Zaman, caught in the deep by a diving Ahmed Shehzad.

“It was an excellent catch. When I hit the ball I never thought that it will be caught but it was a mind blowing effort from Ahmed,”

Zaman said he played according to the situation but Multan Sultans did show a good fight back.

“I was given a role and I played as per that. Multan Sultans is a good team and they fought back admirably. We had a very disappointing collapse but such things are a part of a game.”

“It was disappointing loss despite starting off very well. But there were positives for us too. Umar was in good form while Narine also scored valuable thus indicated that he is a good choice for an opener.

“We will try to take positives from this game and make a comeback in next match,” Zaman stated.

“You don’t have to think about your individual performance, I [wished for a] fifty, I thought the ball was good enough to be struck for a boundary but, unfortunately, I was caught,” said Zaman.
