Opening of Kartarpur corridor widely appreciated in India, says FO spokesman

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal on Wednesday said the groundbreaking of Kartarpur corridor was a monumental event which would open many opportunities for both Pakistan and India.

Talking to the media persons in Islamabad before leaving for Kartarpur, he said this was the initiative of Prime Minister Imran Khan which was widely appreciated including the people in India.

He said the corridor would facilitate the Sikh pilgrims to visit their holiest sites in Pakistan.

Responding to a question, the Foreign Office spokesperson said the construction of the corridor would stand completed before the next birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak in November.

Prime Minister Imran Khan performed the groundbreaking of the much-awaited Kartarpur corridor that will connect Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Kartarpur to Dera Baba Nanak in India’s Gurdaspur district on November 28.

The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and other government officials.

Former Indian cricketer and member of Punjab cabinet Navjot Singh Sidhu and other Indian ministers were also present at the occasion,

A group of Indian journalists and international media were also in attendance to cover the unprecedented event .

The formal opening of the work of the Kartarpur Corridor in India had begun on November 26 after a formal ceremony.
