Pakistan always been at the forefront of UN peace keeping missions: PM Sharif

PM Nawaz Sharif co-hosted a High level event entitled “Leaders Summit on Peacekeeping” on the opening day of the 70th Session of UN General Assembly in New York.  United States President Barack Obama, Presidents of Ethiopia, Indonesia, Rwanda and Uruguay, Prime Ministers of Bangladesh and Japan along with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon were the co-hosts of the summit.

Pakistani Premier said that the UN peace keeping missions guarantees world peace and security and Pakistan is its largest contributor.

“Pakistani peace keeping troops have always been at the front during peace keeping missions across the world”, PM Sharif added.

The Pakistani Premier stated that the country has always supported efforts for reform and strengthening of the UN peacekeeping architecture to enable the organization to better meet the requirements of a continuously evolving security situation.

“It is also our privilege to share our experiences in the field of peacekeeping with member states.  Pakistan has institutionalized a formal peacekeeping training regime in line with UN training objectives. We will continue to offer to the UN our Centre for International Peace and Stability (CIPS) for the conduct of regular peacekeeping courses, workshops and seminars”, he said.

“We are pledging an Infantry Battalion;Transport, Engineering and Signals companies; additional utility helicopters; a Level-II and a Level-III Hospital; and a Canine Platoon for deployment to future UN peacekeeping missions”, PM Sharif stated.

He also lauded U.S. President Barack Obama’s efforts for peace in the world. He added that the basic principles for peace and security have to be taken into consideration.
