Pakistan, India need to address Kashmir dispute through talks: UN chief

“The Secretary General stressed the need for Pakistan and India to address their outstanding issues, including Kashmir, through dialogue in the interest of both countries and the region as a whole,” said a statement issued after the meeting on the sidelines of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly.

“The Secretary-General expressed appreciation to Pakistan for its hosting of one of the largest groups of refugees for decades,” the statement said while referring to the millions of Afghan refugees in the country.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by the Pakistan’s mission to the UN said that during the meeting Nawaz Sharif handed over a dossier of the Indian atrocities on the innocent Kashmiris to the UN Secretary General.

The prime minister also showed pictures of defenceless civilians in Indian-held Kashmir, who suffered the brutal use of force and atrocities at the state level, it said.

“The UN Secretary General expressed his shock while seeing the pictures of the victims of pellets being used by Indian occupying forces,” according to the press release.

He informed Ban Ki-moon about the number of deaths that has now mounted to over 100 since the recent conflict started on July 8 in the region.

“The indiscriminate use of pellet guns, which have blinded hundreds including women and children, is reflective of the inhuman and barbaric mindset of the Indian security forces.”

The UN Secretary General praised Pakistan’s prominent and active role at the United Nations and its contribution to peace and security in the world, the press release added.
