In the 57th Grammy Awards held at Staples Center in Los Angeles, ‘I Am Malala’ took home the prize for the Best Children’s Album award. The audio narration of Malala’s autobiography earned the prize as narrator Neela Vaswani accepted the Grammy on Malala’s behalf on stage. “She’s very busy going to school and saving the children of the world,” said Vaswani reportedly.
Malala Yusufzai became famous when she wrote a blog for BBC, detailing the atrocities and cruelty of Taliban in Swat. Due to the western media’s obsession with her liberal views, Malala was threatened at first and then shot by armed gunmen belonging to the terrorist outfit TTP. The incident drew worldwide contempt and condemnation as Malala managed to survive the gunshot to her face.
The modest girl from Swat also went on to win the Nobel Peace prize for her efforts to promote education for girls worldwide, especially from Pakistan. Her book, I Am Malala: The Story of the Girl Who Stood Up for Education and was Shot by the Taliban, co-written with British journalist Christina Lamb, was published in October 2013 was co-written by famed journalist Christina Lamb. The Washington Post called the book “riveting”.
A Grammy is the most prestigious and prized award for a musician worldwide. The event is held on an annual basis to award the best musical performances and albums of the year. Other artists who won big last night at the Grammys are Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams, Sam Smith and Jack White. We wish Malala Yusufzai congratulations on winning a global award for her book and wish her all the best in her future endeavors. Let’s hope Malala keeps on adding to her tally of prestigious awards and laurels!
