Passenger films ‘near death experience’ as plane catches fire

The passenger described the incident as a ‘near death experience’.

The Singapore Airlines Boeing 777-300ER left the airport headed for Milan, Italy on Monday, however, it turned back just a few hours into the flight due to an engine oil warning.

“It was a heart wrenching 5 mins! Waiting for the fire engine and fire fighters to put out the fire!” said the passenger.

A spokesperson for the airline said the aircraft’s right engine caught fire after the aircraft touched down at Changi Airport.

“The fire was put out by airport emergency services and there were no injuries to the 222 passengers and 19 crew on board,” the spokesman said.

Footage showed a thick cloud of smoke billowing out from under the wing.

No one was injured in the blaze.

The passengers disembarked through stairs and were transported to the terminal building by bus.

“Passengers will be transferred to another aircraft which is expected to depart for Milan later today,” the airline said in a statement.
