PBC holds strike against police torture on lawyers

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Wednesday observed a strike against the police torture on the lawyers outside the building of Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan yesterday, ARY News reports.

In Punjab, the lawyers boycotted the proceedings of cases in the upper and lower courts. The clients of the lawyers were reported to be facing severe problems due to the strike.

The court proceedings in Karachi and Peshawar also remained suspended. President of Peshawar Bar Association said that strict action should be taken against the police officers who lodged baton charge against the lawyers.

In Balochistan, the court proceedings were also delayed due to the strike called by the PBC. Attaullah Langho, General Secretary of Balochistan Bar Council, said that the police torture against the lawyers was a tragic incident.

Earlier on Tuesday, lawyers from Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sahiwal and Dera Ghazi Khan had gathered outside the SC building to demand the formation of benches in their respective High Courts.

The lawyers tried to enter the SC building at which the Police retaliated with baton charge and tear gas shelling.

The injured lawyers were taken to Polyclinic Hospital for first-aid treatment. Scuffles were also reported to occur among the doctors and the injured lawyers during the medical treatment.
