ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Chairman Absar Alam on Monday said that the employees of regulatory authority have been receiving threats by calling on Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and state institutions to play their due role in safeguarding federal media regulatory body, ARY News reported.

Chairman PEMRA while addressing a press conference lamented that regulatory body’s powers have been curtailed.

“I have expressed my concerns in a letter written to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa”, he said.

The chairman said that he has received life threats through a call from an unknown person who might be associated with a media house.

During the presser, the recorded mobile conversation was put on speaker.

“It is due responsibility of the state to provide protection to its institutions and employees”, Alam said.

He said the employees of PEMRA were being harassed while he has received life-threats. “We are striving to fulfill our responsibilities as a regulatory authority but hurdles are being created for us to operate”, he added.

Alam alleged some media houses are televising objectionable content comprising hatred and immoral material by violating all laws and moral values.

“If government failed to protect us, I would tender my resignation”, he said while urging government to step in and empower the state institution.

He further said that PEMRA has huge responsibility to prohibit production houses from misappropriated content.
