Pakistan joins global parliamentary training body, to host 2027 conference

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS) has achieved a major milestone in parliamentary capacity building, as Pakistan has become a member of the interim steering committee of Global Parliamentary Training Institutes (PTIs).

The committee also included the Inter-Parliamentary Union and five countries  Angola, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya and Thailand.

The achievement was made under the guidance of Chairman of the Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, who is also President of the PIPS Board of Governors, and Executive Director Asim Khan Goraya.

PIPS has also been selected to host the second Global Conference of PTIs in Islamabad, expected to take place from 3 to 5 February 2027 in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The decisions were made during the inaugural PTIs conference held in Accra, Ghana, on 23–24 March 2026.

The PIPS executive director and his team attended the conference virtually after cancelling their visit in line with austerity measures announced by the prime minister.

Officials said these developments strengthen Pakistan’s role as an active contributor to international parliamentary cooperation, democratic institution-building, and legislative capacity development.

Hosting the conference in Islamabad will allow Pakistan to showcase its parliamentary progress, expand cooperation with global training institutions, and contribute to discussions on democratic strength, legislative professionalism, and capacity building.
