PM counsel challenges ECP jurisdiction in disqualification hearing

The election commission heard the petitions filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek against PM Sharif.

The references, filed by the four parties, state that Nawaz Sharif is not eligible to become the prime minister under the Article 62 and 63 of the constitution.

Article 62 and 63 of the constitution states that a person has to be Sadiq and Ameen (honest and truthful) in order to become the prime minister of the country.

The prime minister’s lawyer, in today’s arguments,  challenged the the commission’s powers to hear the petitions.

People’s Party’s Barrister Latif Khosa, said that the defence wants to dictate its terms to the election commission. He claimed that the defence has no arguments in the case.

The Chief Election Commissioner said that first a decision will be made over the powers of the ECP.

The commission adjourned the hearing of petitions till 10th October.
