PM Sharif inaugurates Green Pakistan Programme

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif inaugurated “Green Pakistan Programme” by planting a tree at Prime Minister Secretariat on Thursday, ARY News reported.

It should be noted that PM Sharif launched the programme on National Green Day, which is being marked to improve the environment and end pollution from the country.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, speaking on the occasion, said that it is important to make Pakistan an environment friendly country. The prime minister was happy to know that every province is taking part in the campaign.

“Local varieties of trees found in Pakistan will be planted as the international varieties are harmful,” the premier said.

The prime minister expressed his sadness over the excessive harvesting of jungles in the country.

PM Sharif expressed his optimism that the initiative will be effective in dealing with climate change.

According to details, 100 million trees will be planted across the country under the programme, which has been launched under the special instructions and supervision of the prime minister.

Rs. 3 billion will be spent on the project out of which Rs. 500 million will be spent on the plantation process in Islamabad. The rest of the amount will be handed over to the provincial government.

A spokesman of the federal government said that events are being organized to mark the National Green Day.

He said federal government and provincial governments have launched plantation campaign in the country together for the first time in Pakistan’s history.

It should be noted that the coastal city of Karachi is suffering from environmental degradation due to the plantation of conocarpus.

Conocarpus also adversely affects other trees whereas birds also don’t make nests on them. Experts have stated that it also has an affect on the weather system as well.
