PM Sharif lays foundation stone of Kurram Tangi Dam in North Waziristan

PESHAWAR: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday laid the foundation stone of Kurram Tangi Dam project in North Waziristan. 

Addressing the ceremony, PM Sharif said this marks the start of a new era and symbolises the end of an era of fear. He said that efforts are being made to initiate development projects in Fata.

The prime minister said that change has not arrived all of a sudden, but a lot of sacrifices have been rendered. He expressed hope that the internally displaced people will return to their homes by the end of this year.

Kurram Tangi Dam will be completed at a cost of 12.6 billion rupees in two phases. The first phase will be completed in three years.  The dam will have the capacity to store 1.2 million acres feet water.

It will generate 83.4 megawatts electricity besides irrigating vast tracts of land in North Waziristan and Bannu. The dam will also help overcome floods in the area besides bringing socio-economic improvement in the region.

Federal Minister Khawaja Asif, KP Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman were also present on the occasion.
