Poetess Ada Jafri passes away

The poetess breathed her last in a hospital in Karachi where she was being treated.

Ada Jafri was born as Aziz Jahan on August 22, 1924 in Badayun, Uttar Pardesh. The intelligent Ada started to write couplets in Urdu since she was only 13 years old under the name of Ada Badayuni.

The poetess took the pen name of Ada Jafri after her marriage with Nurul Hasan Jafri on 29 January 1947, in Lucknow, India.

After Independence, she moved to Karachi.

Ada Jafri published her first collection of poems, “Maiṉ Sāz Ḍhūṉḍtī Rahī” in 1950. She has published five collections of Urdu poetry, in addition to an autobiography.

She also published her collection of Urdu Haiku, Sāz-i Suḵẖn while her autobiography, “Jo Rahī so BeḴẖabrī Rahī” has also been published.

Ada Jafri was awarded the Adamjee Literary Award by the Pakistan Writers’ Guild in 1967 for her second poetic collection, S̱ẖahr-i Dard.

The Government of Pakistan conferred upon her the Pride of Performance Award for Literature in 2002.
