Police claim arrest of 'key suspect' in Karachi knife attacks

KARACHI: Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a key suspect involved in a spate of knife attacks on women in various localities of the metropolis, ARY News reported.

The mystery behind a series of knife attacks on women in Karachi likely to solve after police claimed to have arrested ‘prime suspect’.

The Additional Inspector General (AIG) Sindh Police on Thursday informed Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah that the police have arrested a key suspect involved in the knife assaults on women in the city, adding that his arrest was made during a raid on Wednesday night.

However, no further details were share with regard to his identity and the motive behind the attacks. The arrest has been reported after a fresh series of attacks that injured five women on Wednesday night.

Police further claimed the arrest has been made after combing through Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage.

It is apropos to mention here that the knife-man extended his reach to other areas of the metropolis on Wednesday by assailing five more women with knife in a span of few hours, apparently changing tactics to evade his arrest and attempt more acts of terrorizing people.

The police yet to unveil the motive behind the stabbings.

These attacks  were carried out in Gulshan-e-Jamal, Rashid Minhas Road, and NIPA Chowrangi near Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology.

Previously, these knife attacks were restricted to Gulistan-e-Jauhar area of the city.

The Law Enforcement Agencies are of the opinion that all the attacks were carried out by a single person. However, the officials are yet to make a comment on the motive behind the assaults.

In light of the CCTV footage, police revealed that the assailant on a motorcycle, wearing a helmet, using sharp objects like paper cutter and knife to carry out attacks on women.

Sindh government has announced prize money of Rs0.5 million for anyone who provides the law enforcement agencies any information with regard to the identity of the attacker.

Talking to media, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal’s Welfare Colony said that her daughter was returning from the park when she was attacked.

She further said that her daughter sustain wound on her back and admitted at the Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre.

The pictures taken from a CCTV footage show the knife attacker on the bike appears to be a thin man aged 20 to 29 years. Police said that the suspect’s height ranges from 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inch.
