Karachi Police chief orders force not to harass couples by demanding ‘Nikahnama’

KARACHI: Chief of Karachi police Dr Amir Ahmed Sheikh has restrained his force from harassing and humiliating young couples by asking them to show their Nikahnama to prove their credentials as husband and wife.

“There is general complaint that policemen in mobiles and motorcycles harass and humiliate couples by asking them to show Nikahnama to prove their credentials as husband and wife, ” a notification issued by the office of the Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Karachi range read.

DIGP South Zone Javed Alam Odho, DIG West Zone Khadim Hussain Rind and DIGP East Zone Amir Farooqui have been directed to issue “strict instructions to the subordinate staff not to demand Nikah Nama from any person. In future such complaint shall not be tolerated and action against supervising officers will also be initiated.”
