Ministry of Water and Power approves power projects for 2,630 megawatts

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Water and Power Pakistan has approved the power projects that will produce 2,630 megawatts, ARY News reported.
The approval has been given in 95th board meeting of Private Power and Infrastructure Board (PPIB) in Islamabad on Wednesday.
Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif told the board members that CWE Investment Corporation China and Trans Tech of Pakistan will work on 590MW Mahl hydropower project which will be set up on Jhelum River on the boundary of Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The board approved issuance of a letter of intent to the joint venture of Al Mirqab Capital of Qatar and Sinohydro Resources of China for developing two coal-fired power plants of 660MW each at Port Qasim, Karachi.
Khawaja Asif said that government is taking different measures to overcome energy crisis.
In this regard, PPIB would invite expressions of interest for 132MW Rajhdani hydropower project to be located on Poonch River in Kotli district.
Furthermore, PPIB managing director said at present 29 IPPs with a total capacity of 8,657MW were operating and providing electricity at higher levels of efficiency.
Board informed that private power plants are providing 57 per cent i.e., 5,900MW of electricity to the national grid. China is also interested to establish hydro power project.
