PPP doesn't support call for snap elections in country: Khursheed Shah

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly (NA) and PPP politician Khursheed Shah on Monday said that his party does not support a call for early elections.

Talking to journalists, the senior politician emphasized that the general elections should be held at its scheduled time.

Expressing reservations on the census results concerning Sindh, Khursheed Shah said the provincial population figure has been understated. However, he said his party has no objection if general elections are held on the basis of the 1998 census results.

Shah said the number of assembly seats would have been increased by 10 to 12 if authentic population figure of the province had been reported. “The population figure was understated in Sindh and PPP still stands by the stance on the issue of delimitation of constituencies,” he added.

However, he said PPP has no issues if the next general elections are held on the basis of the 1998 census results, adding, elections should be held on time.

In response to a question, Shah said ousted PM Nawaz Sharif knows the conspirators as they are within the PML-N ranks.

It merits highlighting here that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has been advocating early elections in the country.

On Sunday (Nov 5), PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry called for early elections in the country.

In a brief video message, the PTI spokesperson said his party would dissolve Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s assembly if the consensus among all political parties formed on dissolving the provincial and national assemblies for an early election.

He said his party would not accept any delay in the elections merely on the basis of legislation on the delimitation bill, as what he said, the census is not the spirit of democracy but the elections.
