LAHORE: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Qamar Zaman Kaira on Tuesday said that the cabinet is not the sole forum after the 18th constitutional amendment for political decisions.

Addressing media, the PPP Punjab President decried that the issue of delimitation of constituencies was not brought the Council of Common Interests (CCI) which can delay the next general elections.

Kaira said that there is no place in the constitution for a national unity government or a technocratic setup, and the PPP will not support it under any circumstances.

The PPP expressed surprise that the PML-N was blaming them for not supporting democracy, while they have just demanded that the accountability process should be conducted equally without any discrimination or dual standard.

“PML-N was never with democracy, has always derailed it,” he said adding that ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif cannot receive any NRO from his own government.

“After 18th Amendment, the cabinet is not the sole forum to make a constitutional decision,” he said. He deplored government lack of seriousness and interest in bringing the issue of constitutional delimitation to the CCI which can cause a delay in the next general elections.

He said the PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will soon provide the next course of action. “The seasonal birds move according to the weather. When the (political) season arrives, they will flock to us,” he said adding the PPP has always worked not to break up parties but showed political acumen.

He further said that PPP was not making any demands, but rather calling on the government to complete its constitutional responsibilities. “The govt rather than realising its mistakes are blaming it on us,” he said.

He said that Nawaz Sharif is disqualified and will not be able to participate in the next elections, and the federal government rather than safeguarding one family should instead focus on the country.

He said the federal ministers were repeatedly criticising the judiciary and military, who are showing immense restraint and patience. “The rulers main target is to criticise the judiciary and the army,” he said adding that it was an attempt to disperse the two institutions.

Kaira said that the PPP wanted the general elections to be held on time, but instead the PML-N is speaking the language of someone else. “Whenever democracy was derailed, they have been against democracy.”

He said PML-N was attempting to create discord between the military and the judiciary, but both institutions were showing immense restraint and patience. “We are with democracy, and there is no threat to it,” he said.

He said the law will show its own course of action, and there will be equal justice for everyone, and even if Nawaz Sharif evades the cases, then still he cannot participate in the next elections. “You need a PhD to understand the politics of Asif Zardari.”
