Rahat Fateh Ali Khan stands up for Adnan Sami

Following Adnan Sami’s controversial remarks regarding his stay in India, it seems like no Pakistani might speak out in his favour or support him. However, contemporary artist Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has came out in support of Adnan Sami Khan and expressed disappointment over Pakistanis for burning Adnan Sami’s effigies.

Adnan Sami Khan’s Pakistani passport had expired on May 26th 2015, hence he had sought citizenship from the Indian government. The Indian home minister had recently allowed Sami to stay in India for an ‘indefinite period’. Following this decision, Adnan Sami had expressed his satisfaction and happiness with the Indian government and stated,”I’m very thankful to the Indian ­government for considering my plea. But I’m waiting for the day the government grants me ­citizenship of this country. Right now I’m from no man’s land because my Pakistani ­citizenship has been renounced now,” said Adnan Sami.

“I have heard that people in Pakistan are not very happy with this news and are burning my effigies. But I’m happy that I have finally found my home,” Adnan said.

Rahat commented on the scenario and said,”If effigies have been burnt, then it’s wrong. Every individual is free and it his decision to stay wherever he wants. There are no boundaries for music. It’s a very bad feeling for me. It should not happen.”

On Thursday, the “Main jahaan rahun” and “O re piya” singer was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) here in a case of alleged forex violation. In 2011, he was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence following a day’s detention at the airport here for carrying undisclosed foreign currency totalling more than $100,000.
