PIA CEO visits PK-661 crash site

ISLAMABAD: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pakistan International Airline (PIA) Bernd Hildenbrand on Saturday visited Saddha Batolni village in Havelian, where ATR 42 aircraft (AP-BHO) flight no. PK-661 had crashed on December 7.

On this occasion, he said PIA would ensure that remaining dead bodies are also handed over immediately after their identification process is completed.

“PIA is taking all possible steps to facilitate the bereaved families and would ensure that remaining dead bodies are also handed over immediately after their identification process is completed,” he said.

He said PIA has nominated focal persons for coordinating with those families keeping them updated in this regard.

Hildenbrand laid a wreath of flowers at the site and observed one-minute silence in remembrance of the martyrs.

He met local people of the area and thanked them for promptly helping in rescue efforts.

Director Vigilance of PIA Brig (retd) Mohammad Asif also accompanied the CEO and examined the area.

Hildenbrand also visited the embassy of Austria, in addition to meeting the relatives of the Chinese citizen who lost his life in the incident and extended his heartfelt condolences.

DNA testing will be used to identify the 48 charred victims of the plane crash.

The PIA flight PK-661 crashed into a hillside after one of its two turboprop engines failed while travelling from the city of Chitral to the capital, and burst into flames killing everyone on board.

“The dead bodies will be taken to Islamabad in helicopters…. for DNA testing and identification,” Muhammad Abbas, a hospital official at Ayub Medical Complex in the northern garrison town of Abbottabad, told AFP.
