Judiciary will fall apart if people's support dwindles: CJP

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Saturday once again reiterated that he does not have any personal agenda to pursue and vowed to ensure provision of rights to people.

Speaking at a ceremony here, the chief justice reaffirmed the judiciary is completely independent and that he will ensure provision of rights to people before completion of his tenure as the top adjudicator of the country.

He said when a decision is handed down, voice of martial law is heard. Who will dare impose martial law in the country, he asked.

Justice Nisar said he had earlier cleared that he would leave if martial law is imposed. He asked the people talking about judicial martial law to clear their minds. There is no room for judicial martial law in the country’s constitution, he added.

He said the judiciary has been deciding cases with the support of people, adding that if the support dwindles, the judiciary will fall apart.

In an apparent reference to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s movement for restoration of the sanctity of vote, the chief justice said the sanctity of vote is to serve the masses as per the country’s constitution.

He said it is not the sole responsibility of the judiciary to dispense justice, adding that there are other institutions in the country that too are responsible for provision of justice.
