KARACHI: Muttahida Quami Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) ousted convenor Farooq Sattar on Friday extended an olive branch in a attempt to heal the internal party rift, and conceded to allow the Bahadurabad wing to nominate four candidates for the upcoming Senate elections.

Addressing media ahead of the general workers session, Farooq Sattar was adamant that he was the legitimate leader of the MQM and had been accepted as convenor by the election commission. “MQM-Pakistan is registered with my name, the kite is our election symbol.”

He urged party workers not be misled by rumour-mongering Bahadurabad wing. “You (Bahadurabad wing) are deliberately holding an illegal party session. Workers should not fall for the misleading propaganda of the defunct Rabita committee.”

He also called all those at the Bahadurabad wing to join him, saying that a party is not known by the officer bearers but rather than its activists.

“I rescued the MQM after the August 23 incident, the kite is still the symbol of the PIB,” he said adding those who will win the intra-party election on Sunday will be the legitimate office-bearers of the party.

He said that he had agreed to visit the Bahadurabad faction on the precondition that they should call off the consultative session held there. However, he said he was ready to bury the hatchet, but the Bahadurabad wing instead brought the matter in the limelight.

He further said that he was not giving the impression that he was sidelined due to the Senate elections. “I have more responsibilities, should also be given more authority,” he said adding that he was not asking for the power which MQM founder wielded.

Therefore, he announced that he was taking a major decision and would allow the Bahadurabad wing to nominate four candidates for the Senate elections, and he was not in favour of the matter being settled in the courts.

“I am not asking for authority, they (Bahudurabad wing) give four names and I will accept them,” he said.

He said that he has been informed through mutual friends that Kamran Tessori was disgruntled and was currently in Islamabad, adding that he was disheartened by the current situation.
