Saudi Arabia planning world’s richest cricket tournament

Saudi Arabia is planning to take the cricketing world by storm by launching the “world’s richest” T20 cricket tournament.

A foreign news agency reported that the Saudi Arabia government are in talks with Indian Premier League officials and team owners for the project. It is pertinent to mention that the Board of Control for Cricket in India bars Indian cricketers from playing in overseas competitions.

The Chairman of the International Cricket Council Greg Barclay confirmed that Saudi Arabia is planning to invest in franchise cricket after golf and formula one. 

“If you look at other sports they’ve been involved in, cricket is something I imagine would be attractive to them,” Greg Barclay said.

He added, “Given their advance into sport more generally, cricket would work quite well for Saudi Arabia. They’re pretty keen to invest in sport, and given their regional presence, cricket would seem a pretty obvious one to pursue.” 

It is pertinent to mention that Pakistan cricketing legend Wasim Akram visited Riyadh where he met the Chairman of the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation Prince Saud bin Mishal Al Saud. 

They discussed the sport’s future in the country.
