The apex court conducted hearing of the case pertaining to illegal billboards and hoardings in its Karachi registry during which it ruled that even if a hundred billboards are required to be removed to save a life, then remove them.

Administrator of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Roshan Sheikh told the court that over 20 institutions allow placement of billboards, while the Cantonment Board has erected the largest billboard of the country on FTC overhead bridge.

Justice Ameer Hani Muslim, in his remarks, said that billboards on footpaths and greenbelts are illegal.

“These giant hoardings may fall due to strong winds and hence pose a threat to human lives,” he said. “Here, no one comes to pick up garbage, who will come to lift these hoardings?”

The apex court also expressed displeasure over the absence of the chief executive of the Karachi Cantonment Board.

It ordered removal of all dangerous billboards across the megapolis within a month and directed concerned authorities to submit its report.

The SC also summoned KMC and Karachi Cantonment Board officials on the next hearing.
