SFA raids bakeries in Karachi, imposes fine over poor hygiene

KARACHI: The Sindh Food Authority (SFA) team on Friday raided different eateries in the city imposed a fine over poor hygiene conditions, ARY News reported.

The SFA team led by its deputy director Sameera Hussain raided different bakeries and confectionary shops in district West and imposed a Rs 10000 fine on one of the bakeries.

While another raid was conducted at Karachi Bakers and a Rs 30,000 fine was imposed after the bakery management was found violating hygiene standards in their kitchen.

The team, in another raid, granted a seven-day time to M. Suleman Bakers to improve sanitary conditions at the bakery. The raiding team found rotten material for baking use in fridges of different bakeries. While oil and wheat were kept in open places, hence exposing them to dust and other pollution.

The SFA officials also found unclean water was being used in most of the bakeries.

Recently, the Sindh Food Authority had raided several restaurants in city’s North Nazimabad area over unhygienic conditions. One of the restaurants was found utilizing the used oil multiple times. The items were also not properly frozen while crockery for serving the food was also not clean. The team imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the restaurant.

The SFA team found hygiene standards were sheerly compromised in food making to the core. The food inspectors said they had previously served notices to the food outlets, but the restaurant owners apparently turned a blind eye to it.
