SFA to recruit 40 food safety officers

KARACHI: In the wake of the death of two minor brothers from food poisoning after eating unhygienic food at a restaurant in Karachi, the provincial government has decided to make the Sindh Food Authority (SFA) more effective to check quality of food being sold at eateries in the province.

The Sindh chief secretary on Tuesday presided over a meeting of the SFA during which a number of key decisions were taken to improve the working of the regulatory body.

It was decided that the SFA would recruit 40 food safety officers and launch a campaign to spread awareness among the public about expiry of food items. Food samples to be collected from eateries will be sent to the University of Karachi’s laboratory for examination.

Yesterday, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar took suo motu notice of the death of the two minor brothers due to consuming unhygienic food at a local restaurant in Karachi and sought report the authorities concerned within ten days.

CJP Nisar ordered the SFA and Ministry of National Food Security and Research to submit a comprehensive report on the tragic incident.

The CJP expressed displeasure over the performance of SFA and added that the authority complete failed in the province.

On Nov 11, the two minor brothers died of food poisoning after consuming unhygienic meal at a restaurant in Karachi.
