SHC moved against police failure to nab mysterious knifeman

KARACHI: The failure of police to arrest mysterious knifeman stabbing women in the metropolis has left a blot on the performance of the law enforcement agencies and exposed their incompetence.

A petition has been filed in the Sindh High Court seeking its directives for the authorities to hand over the task of arresting the knife attacker to the Rangers and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

The petition states knife attacks have instilled fear into the hearts of women living in the city’s Gulistan-e-Johar and Gulshan-e-Iqbal areas. The police have failed to bring the culprit to book, it adds.

It states how incompetent the force is evident from the fact that Sindh government has offered Rs1 million reward for information on the knifeman.

The mystery still surrounds the motive behind knife assaults on women, besides the number of attackers involved in the assaults. Earlier, police had claimed to have made a ‘key arrest’ but the claims fell flat when a woman came under an attack in Gulistan-e-Johar area.

The speculations still revolve around the attacker’s modus operandi, particularly after the assailant extended his reach to other areas of the metropolis, assailing five more women with knife in a span of few hours.

The change of location further terrorized the masses. However, the officials opined that the tactic might have been employed to evade arrest and baffle investigation officers.

The attacks  were carried out in Gulshan-e-Jamal, Rashid Minhas Road, and NIPA Chowrangi near Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology.

Previously, the knife assaults were restricted to Gulistan-e-Johar locality.
