SHC terms SLGA amendments 'unconstitutional'

KARACHI: Sindh High Court (SHC) has termed the amendments in the Sindh Local Government Act (SLGA) 2013 as unconstitutional, ARY News reports on Monday.

A two member bench, comprising of Justice Sajjad Ali Shah and Justice Farooq Shah, termed the amendments unconstitutional.

Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and other political and social parties had challenged the amendments in the Sindh High Court earlier. They had taken the stance that the new constituences were contradictory to the constitution.

Advocate General of Sindh, while arguing in the court, stated that the new constituencies were according to the constitution of the country and the Provincial Government has the authority to form the constituencies.

More than 10 petitions were filed in the High Court against the amendments. Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has challenged the Local Bodies (LB) Elections in the province. The verdict is yet to be announced.
