Sheikh Rasheed booked for violating fireworks ban

RAWALPINDI: A case has been registered against chief of Awami Muslim League (AML), Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, for violating the fireworks ban.

The AML leader has been nominated in the First Information Report (FIR)  for displaying fireworks during his visit to local union council despite a ban on it. Police say that the Punjab government had already imposed a ban on fireworks.

The people named in the FIR had reportedly used fireworks in Union Council 40 along with areas part of NA 60 and NA 62 — the constituencies Rasheed is contesting the upcoming polls.

The case has been filed under clauses 285 and 286 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) which pertain to the negligent conduct with respect to fire or combustible matter and explosive substances.

The AML chief is contesting the general elections from two Rawalpindi constituencies — NA-60 and NA-62. The Supreme Court on June 13 had dismissed a plea seeking to disqualify Rasheed from contesting the elections.

The petition was filed by PML-N leader Shakeel Awan, who claimed Rasheed had intentionally misrepresented his assets on his nomination forms.
