Sindh CM seeks permission for state funeral for Ruth Pfau

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali on Thursday requested the federal government to allow state funeral of Sister Ruth Katharina Martha Pfau.

The leprosy doctor passed away at the age of 88 here today morning. The German nun lost her battle with life while she was undergoing a surgery at the Marie Adelaide Leprosy Centre.

In a letter sent to the federal government, Murad expressed sorrow over demise of Ruth Pfau, who devoted 50 years of tireless struggle fighting the stigmatized disease of leprosy in Pakistan. She led the country to be declared by the World Health Organization as first Asian country to have controlled leprosy in 1996.

The CM said Pfau was recognized globally for her services and received numerous degrees and awards. The government of Pakistan bestowed her with Sitara-e-Pakistan, Hilal-e-Pakistan and Hilal-e-Imtiaz for her invaluable contributions.

Through the letter he sought a state funeral from the president in her honor and recognition of her invaluable service to Pakistan.

It may be noted that funeral mass will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017, at Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Saddar, Karachi and she will be laid to rest at the Christian cemetery, Karachi.
