KARACHI: The provincial government on Wednesday has imposed a ban on swimming at beaches of the metropolis under Section 144 after the death toll due to drowning rose to eight in last 24 hours, ARY News reported.
The high tides of the sea swept away over a dozen people in last one week raising alarm about the mounting death toll by drowning in the city.
Four school going students died yesterday after drowning at Sandspit beach who had arrived there with the school administration for a picnic. The deceased were the residents of Orangi Town.
Separately, two bodies were retrieved from Do Darya, Sea View beach of the metropolis while another person was rescued in an unconscious condition who was shifted to a private hospital for medical attendance. All of them were reportedly drowned while swimming in the rough waters of the Arabian Sea.
Albeit, the government claimed to take precautionary measures to prevent loss of life along the city beaches but the rising number of drowning incidents in the city casts doubts on government’s hefty claims.
It is worth mentioning here that Pakistan is ranked in the list of the countries having higher number of deaths due to drowning. In 2014, at least 41 people died after drowning at Seaview beach during Eid holidays.
