Sindh proposes two names for police chief

KARACHI: Sindh and the federal government were failed to reach over agreement about the appointment of the new police chief of the province, ARY News reported on Friday.

A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Tasadduq Hussain Jilani has ordered today to the provincial government to appoint the police chief within seven days. 

The key post has been vacant since the former Inspector General of Police Asghar Nadeem Baloch reached to his superannuation on February 20th, 2014.

Sindh government has sent the names of Iqbal Mehmood and Fayyaz Laghari to the centre for appointment of the provincial police chief. 

The two police officials have served in Sindh and one of them Iqbal Mehmood has also been the part of the ongoing targeted operation against criminals in Karachi. 

According to sources, the operation will suffer setback if one of the two proposed police officials would not named as the Inspector General of Police. 

The provincial authorities were also of the view that after the 18th Amendment, federation has been bound to consult with the province over appoint of the police chief, sources said. 

According to sources, the federal government had earlier sent the names of three police officers Mushtaq Sukhera, Mir Zubair and Captain Liaquat to the province but the provincial government rejected all three names. 

The centre-province row over the matter has proved setback for the ongoing targeted operation in Karachi, which had in its initial phase proved much effective and curbed crimes in the city. 

All three cells of the CID Police  also working without chiefs, while the seat of the Anti-Violent Crime Cell is also vacant and waiting for appointment of a permanent head.
