Six foreigners among nine tourists trapped in Gilgit landsliding

Roads have also been blocked following landsliding in Sust Village. Locals have been complaining that edibles have gone short in the area while government supply was nowhere in sight.

Sust is a village in Gojal, Upper Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan.

The foreigners tourists who are trapped in the area include two Germans, three Irish, and one American.

It is learnt that the tourists were stranded in the area for around 14 days and awaiting government help.

Communications were knocked out across much of the northwestern region after rains triggered the landslides last week.

Gilgit-Baltistan was the worst hit. About 175 landslides blocked roads, with stranded foreign tourists and local travellers airlifted by military planes and helicopters.

The military said that more than 600 troops were working around the clock to restore communications and clear roads in both provinces.

Severe weather in recent years has killed hundreds and destroyed huge tracts of prime farmland.

During the rainy season last summer, torrential downpours and flooding killed 81 people and affected almost 300,000 people across the country.
