Southern England: A boater accidentally drained a canal by failing to close the locks properly.

Photos show how part of Kennet and Avon Canal became a trickle in the mud, with boats resting on the ground yesterday.

A spokesman for the Canal and River Trust told the BBC they were ‘rushing and left the paddles up’.

They explained the paddles ‘work like a plug on a bath in allowing water in and out of the locks’.

The canal was almost totally drained. The water level is controlled by locks.

Water levels have returned to normal now.

The Kennet and Avon Canal is 87 miles long, links London with the Bristol Channel, and passes through Wiltshire and the Cotswolds.
