Spillways of Khanpur Dam opened as water reached its maximum limit

RAWALPINDI:  Spillways of Khanpur Dam have been opened on Friday after water reached its maximum limit, ARY News reported.

Sources said that the spillways were opened to released the spare water as the current level could be dangerous for its embankments. The said that deputy commissioners of Rawalpindi, Attock  and Haripur had been informed about the opening of spillways.

The sources said that 6,500 cusec water was being released though the spillways while the dam was receiving 585.86 cusec water.

Earlier, the Water Resources ministry had warned of a “super flood’ in the country this year due to heavy rainfall in monsoon on March 19.

The officials of the water resources ministry had told a hearing of the National Assembly’s standing committee on water resources that the country will receive more rainfall in monsoon season, which could result in flooding. The ministry’s officials had  called for preparations to meet any flood emergency situation.

Nawab Yousuf Talpur, chairing the committee’s meeting had said that a detailed briefing will be called over the arrangements to avoid devastation of flood.
