Study reveals e-cigarettes produce ‘unacceptably dangerous’ levels of harmful toxins

NEVADA, UNITED STATES: A new study was published which revealed that flavoured e-ciggarettes produce “unacceptably dangerous” levels of harmful compunds.

According to a foreign news website, researchers at the Desert Research Institute discovered that toxic aldehydes were formed when the flavoured liquid in the e-cigarettes were rapidly heated to create vapour.

Professor Andrey Khylstov, one of the researchers, said that it was unknown how the compounds in e-cigarette liquids affect the chemical composition and toxicity of the vapour.

“Our results show that production of toxic aldehydes is exponentially dependent on the concentration of flavouring compounds,” Khylstov said.

He added, “One puff of any of the flavoured e-liquids that we tested exposes the smoker to unacceptably dangerous levels of these aldehydes, most of which originates from thermal decomposition of the flavouring compounds.”

“These results demonstrate the need for further, thorough investigations of the effects of flavouring additives on the formation of aldehydes and other toxic compounds in e-cigarette vapours.”

The researchers tested different concentrations of flavoured and unflavoured e-cigarette liquids.

Professor Vera Samburova stated that all important parameers which could have an impact on the production of alehyde were fixed and the concentration and type of the concentration were varied for determining the particular role of the flavouring compounds.

A review by Public Health England stated that e-cigarettes can be prescribed to smokers for helping them quit tobacco. It was also mentioned in the review that they were 95 percent less harmful than tobacco.
