Karachi law and order case: Supreme Court rejects IGP Sindh report

A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali, heard Karachi law and order case for the second day at Karachi Registry of the apex court.

The bench expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the police department.

The bench asked the Sindh police chief for a list of prisoners released on parole since 2012.

The bench also asked the IG Police, how two death sentence convicts were released on parole.

The court asked the Chief Secretary for a report on Rangers’ powers so that the court could decide the matter.

The court also directed Sindh government and the centre to search for the solutions to address the Rangers reservations.

Director General Sindh Rangers had pleaded to the Supreme Court yesterday to allow the paramilitary force to set up its own ‘police stations’ as he took a swipe at the police for its poor investigation.

“If this is done, obviously after registering FIR and conducting investigation, challans shall be filed in normal courts or anti-terrorism courts established under the judicial system of Pakistan.”

Presenting a progress report before the court on behalf of the DG Rangers the counsel said that between September 2013 and March 4, 2016, the paramilitary force had arrested 5,096 suspects who had been handed over to the police for prosecution. Of these 168 had been convicted while 83 had been acquitted by the courts while 1,156 had been released on bail.

The court adjourned the hearing of the case till March 10.
