Supreme Court removes head of Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has suspended Dr Akhtar Saeed, the head of the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI), and its board of governors (BoG). 

Headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, a three-judge bench of the apex court issued a written order today, preventing Mr Saeed from leaving the country without court permission.

It appointed a new adhoc management committee of the institute with Justice (retd) Iqbal Hameedur Rehman as its head. Professor Jawad Sajid, Lt General (retd) Shahid Niaz, Saifullah Chattha and Khusro Pervaiz Khan will be discharging their responsibilities as members of the committee.

The apex court directed the committee to begin looking after the affairs of the institute without delay.

The former PKLA head, and board of governors have been asked to hand over the hospital’s documents, accounts, and relevant record to the new provisional committee at once.

As per the verdict, the new committee will ensure immediate completion of the hospital and adjoining buildings and make transparent appointments of relevant staff as per the law.

It is further required to ensure provision of medical and surgical facilities to people at suitable rates.

The Supreme Court will fix salaries of the committee head and members in next hearing.

The committee will hold at least one meeting in 15 days and submit a performance report to the apex court every month.
