PM’s adviser to highlight Pakistan’s efforts to tackle climate change at COP24

ISLAMABAD: Ambassador of Sweden in Pakistan Ingrid Johansson called on Adviser to the Prime Minister on Climate Change Malik Amin Aslam at his office in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The adviser apprised the envoy about Pakistan’s efforts for environmental protection and his upcoming visit to Katowice, Poland for 24th Conference of the Parties of the United Nation Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP-24).

He said that he would highlight Pakistan’s efforts on adaptation, mitigation, climate finance and billion tree plantation project at the COP-24 meeting. He would also highlight the hazardous impact of global warming on glaciers in Pakistan, he added.

He said that these melting glaciers result in Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) which are very dangerous and occur when the ice walls containing the reservoir collapse, sending entire lakes down to inhabited areas and such occurrences cause severe loss of lives as well as property.

The Sweden ambassador conveyed her pleasure to Malik Amin for leading Pakistani delegation at COP-24 at Katowice, Poland and further briefed the him about socio-political situation in Sweden and highlighted the efforts of Sweden in environmental protection and pollution reduction by transforming the energy sector form non-renewable sources to renewable sources like solar and wind energy.

She added Sweden is in the lead in the European Union league in exporting renewable energy to the neighboring countries which gives a substantial boost to its GDP.

Highlighting the European Union Legislation on Environment, which envisages reduction of Greenhouse Gases emission below 40 per cent, she said that Sweden is strictly complying with the European Union protocol on environmental protection.

Ingrid Johansson reiterated that Sweden is a small territorial country with population of ten million but has a higher GDP than Pakistan because it focused on quality education, capacity building and sustainable development.

She said that Sweden is very keen in investing on education, business development, and Information Technology sectors to further enhance bilateral relations between two countries.
